Striker Rachel Hill made quite an impact in her first game for the Seacoast United Phantoms, leading the squad to a 1-0 victory over visiting New England Mutiny on Wednesday evening at Portsmouth High School.
After a slow first half where neither team looked to create much of an attack, the vast majority of the 2nd half was played in the Mutiny end. Adjustments discussed at the half by coaches Chris Scott and James Blackwell were seen immediately as the teams took the field after the break. Both Hill and midfielder Lydia Simmons sparked the Phantoms offense, creating multiple quality scoring opportunities for the home team. Hill and Simmons are current U17’s within the Club’s youth system.
In the 47th minute, a great individual effort was displayed by Hill as she hustled to chase down the Mutiny defender and win the ball, then entered the box with just the goalkeeper to beat. However her hesitation allowed for the defender to close in before winning the ball in the box.
Hill was relentless in attacking the Mutiny defenders. Twice she was on the receiving end of a cross for a header on goal, the first hitting the crossbar from 6 yards out in the 64th minute, and the 2nd stopped on a fantastic diving save high to the right of Mutiny goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon from 8 yards out in the 78th minute. Hill finally found the back of the net in the 79th minute after collecting a rebound
off a Mutiny defender for a 25 yard blast high into the far corner. Overall the Phantoms looked rejuvinated and sharper with their passing. Stephanie Gilkenson and Monique Lamotte did well to control the midfield.
Goalkeepers Erica Correa and Andrea Green combined for the shutout, the Phantoms’ second of the season.
The win moves the Phantoms’ record to 2-0-1, currently best in the Northeast Atlantic-North division, while the Mutiny fall to 1-1-1. The next game for the WPSL Phantoms is scheduled for Saturday, June 16th when they travel to Brunswick, ME to face the Seacoast United Mariners on the campus of Bowdoin College at 4pm.
